The Kirbridges marriage, such as it is, is on the decline. Elizabeth is frustrated at not yet having consummated their marriage while Lawrence expresses the view that sexual relations are not necessary for a couple to love one another. Lawrence confides in his publisher Sir Edwin Partridge who offers to seduce Elizabeth and thus deal with the new bride's sexual frustrations on Lawrence's behalf. At a soirée organized by Lawrence for some of his literary friends, the champagne is flowing freely, Partridge is at his best in the role of seducer and soon finds his way into Elizabeth's bed. Below stairs meanwhile, Thomas has been planting the idea that the Kirbridges need a motorcar, though Lawrence quickly realizes that it is Thomas who seems to want one. Buchan explains that the killers are cannibals, eating their victims to assume their power and goodness. Following Josie's disappearance Miles and Chandler learn that she too was interviewed by Dunn and that he is part of an exclusive dining club - though they feed on endangered species, not people. After Josie's body is found Miles installs a CCTV camera in the police station, which captures Louise Iver committing acts of sabotage which have caused the recent disasters. He believes she is an immortal succubus, inciting others to murder, though Buchan is sceptical. After a vicar, a member of the dining club and another person hailed for good deeds, is killed his widow points the police to a Domesday cult expecting the end of the world and dining on the godly to save their souls. The Trotter's have fallen on hard times, largely due to Rodney's £500 investment in suntan lotion during one of the worst winters ever seen. To make things worse, the deep-fat fryer they sold to Mike, landlord of The Nag's Head, is on the blink and the tension brings Del and Rodney to boiling point. But throughout all this trouble, Uncle Albert, who Rodders blames for their bad luck, keeps telling them that something will turn up. As Albert leaves the pub, he accidentally falls through an open cellar door, and the Trotters' quickly come up with a way to get some cash - by suing the pub for damages. Albert's accident claim finally makes it to court, but to the shock of Del and Rodney, it appears that their Uncle has already sought 15 identical damages claims going back to 1944. Their case gets chucked out of court, and Albert admits he was using some of the tricks he learnt in parachute training to try and help Del and Rodney pay for Grandad's headstone.
